OBJECTIVE

Though monasticism is a path chosen by few, all of us can learn from those who choose it.

INSTRUCTIONS/IDEAS

  • Painting a qalansuwa (monk's cap)
    • Materials: A Posterboard, Markers/Crayons/Colored Pencils/Painting Supplies

The Philippi Collection: The Kalansowa (قلنسوة), Headgear of the Coptic Orthodox Monks

  • Put together a monk's cap
    • Put 12 crosses, representing the 12 disciples because monks are disciples of Christ.
    • Draw the line down the middle of the 12 crosses, representing the trials of the monks and when the devil fought with St. Antony, ripping the cap in half.
    • Put a cross at the bottom of the centerline which represents Christ
  • Have the kids decorate around it and put the virtues and names of the saints they learned about in order to review what they learned.
  • Or Take kids on a field trip to the monastery
