OBJECTIVE

The objective for this grade is to learn about love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, self-control etc., through spirituality. Another objective is to teach the children that by planting their lives in Jesus and trying to be like Him, they will develop the same characteristics as Him. These characteristics are called the Fruits of the Spirit. Additionally, we must aim to make children to be fully equipped spiritually against the attacks of the devil on our minds and our hearts, as well as teaching the disciplines of spirituality as we practice them in the Orthodox Church.

INSTRUCTIONS/IDEAS

• Song: Have the kids perform the Fruit of the Spirit song to their parents or a younger class.
• "Narrow Road" Game
  • Lay out with masking tape, or some other method of clear marking, a narrow trail around the room. The campers then must walk the trail, keeping at least one foot on the tape all the time. Emphasize that it is VERY important that they complete the course and stay on course
  • Put obstacles on the course such as chocolate or other goodies just out of reach in different places, to tempt them off of the trail.
  • The course should take 3 minutes to complete. Set them off at 30-second intervals.
  • Explain that, although it is not a race, their best times will be logged.
  • Near the finish line, have someone the kids really respect, yourself if you aren't at the start line, tell the kids that the exercise is over and, because you are running out of time they must go back to the start WITHOUT COMPLETING THE COURSE
  • After, invite comments about what was the most difficult temptation/difficulty to overcome.
• Fruits of the Spirit Collage
  • Assign one fruit to each student and have them cut out and paste pictures and verses to make a collage for each fruit. Hang the collages in the classroom on a string or on the wall.
