Capstone

OBJECTIVE

The objective for this grade is to identify a few of the ways in which we may be conformed to this world and learn ways to be transformed by the renewing of our mind.

INSTRUCTIONS/IDEAS

The focus of this Capstone will be creating a "relay race" with one major activity from each of the previous 4 lessons.

Divide the children into two teams (co-ed, if possible), and set up the 4 activities (which will be described below) to see which team can make it to the end of the race the fastest. After the relay race, meet for approximately 20 minutes and have a group discussion about how the activities may have related to one of the previous weeks' lessons.

Purity and Modesty

  • Dip a match in water before class without the children knowing and ask them to use a lighter to light the match. The match will not light because the water protected it. But have this as the last activity and give the teams 120 seconds to attempt to match it.
  • The point of this lesson is that there is protection around something that can be potentially destructive.
  • Discussion: This is where you will reveal that the match was protected with water and you can ask the children what they think the water symbolizes.

How We Spend Our Time

  • Provide a 20 piece puzzle without the top of the puzzle box so they won't know what the puzzle is. Time the children 120 seconds and ask them to put the puzzle together. After the 120 seconds are up, have them move on to the next station.
  • The point of this activity is that without a Guide of some sort (puzzle box picture), the children will be aimless. They may be able to put one or two pieces together, possibly by luck, or even strategy, but the puzzle was not intended to be put together with no idea of what it is.
  • Discussion: "How would it have been easier for you to complete the puzzle?" If you had the picture to look at. It's easier to do something when you have rules to follow. What is the rulebook of our life? Bible. Read it. "Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path Psalm 119:105

Peer Pressure

  • Have two sheets of construction paper glued together. The goal is to separate the two sheets of construction paper without tearing either paper. Give the group 120 seconds for this activity before moving on to the next station.
  • Discussion: What would have happened if you glued these two pieces of paper and you pulled them apart after a short time before they dried, they're not destroyed. They're likely just stained from the remnants of the glue. Now, how about if the friendship lasted longer... months... years? What ends up happening?

Bullying and Prejudice

  • Have a tube of travel size toothpaste and a paper plate. Each group is required to empty the toothpaste onto the paper plate and show the moderator, then quickly work to put the toothpaste back into the tube. Give the group 120 seconds to complete this activity.
  • This is an example of how hurtful words once spoken cannot be taken back. Bullies say hurtful words frequently and need to know the impact that their words have on others.
  • Discussion: Words and actions are strong and powerful. They cannot be taken back. It is important that we observe what we say and do beforehand.

End the Capstone by engaging in a "Chocolate Chip Cookie" activity: Be A Chocolate Chip
