Liturgy Module

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this module is to teach seventh graders about the details and symbolism of various aspects of the church. The students will learn about how all features and details that are found in the church, such as the vessels, architecture, hymnology, iconography, etc., have deep spiritual meanings beyond what we can observe with our senses. When we understand the symbolism of the details, we are able to appreciate the traditions of our church.

MILESTONES

  • Scripture: The symbolism of the various elements discussed in this module are all based on biblical references either directly or metaphorically. For example, icons contain biblical messages, hymns are primarily direct quotations from scripture, and vestments are based on descriptions given in the Bible
  • Spiritual: All of the details discussed have spiritual meanings beyond what we can observe with our senses, and that these meanings are intended to help us to come closer to God during our prayers. God's love is embedded in everything around us.
  • Social: The goal is for the students to embrace their experiences in the church as they grow in their understanding of the symbolism of the things they see and the hymns they chant.
  • Rituals: The elements discussed in the lessons are core to our liturgical practice. Our faith and the teachings of the church are embedded in the church's structure, icons, hymns and vestments.
