OBJECTIVE

In this module, students will gain a deep understanding of the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount. Our Lord Jesus Christ gave us the eight Beatitudes as instructions on how to live a Christian life to gain the Kingdom of Heaven. In each week, we will focus on two Beatitudes and discuss what they are, what they are NOT, the reward, examples, and applications for seventh graders.

INSTRUCTIONS/IDEAS

  • Review the eight Beatitudes, and write each on the board. Make sure that each student understands what each one means.
  • Out of a square piece of paper, make an origami "Cootie Catcher" by folding the paper. Tutorial can be found here:

  • On the four flaps, you will write a number reference from the Bible. For example: 10 (Commandments), 4 (Gospels), 2 (Testaments), 3 (Wisemen), 7 Sacraments, 3 Holy Trinity, 1 God, 12 Disciples ...
  • On the 8 flaps underneath it, write a one word for each Beatitude: Poor in Spirit, Mourn, Meek, Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness, Merciful, Pure of Heart, Peacemakers, and Persecuted
  • Underneath each of those flaps of each Beatitude, have each student paraphrase their meaning. For example:
    • Poor in Spirit: "Be humble since all our gifts and blessings come from God";
    • Mourn: "We are regretful over our sins and the sins of the world, for we have hurt the One who gave us life";
  • There are plenty of resources online for paraphrasing each Beatitude.
  • Once the Cootie Catchers have been filled out, have them play with each other by rotating pairs.
