OBJECTIVE

The objective for this grade is to identify major differences between Orthodox Chrisitanity and other denominations and religions. In this module students learned about Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Cults, and Far-Eastern religions.

The goal of comparative theology is for the students to strengthen their own faith while gaining an understanding of those of others, so that ultimately they may be able to stand firm when faced with conflicting views or beliefs. "...And always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear" (1 Peter 3:15)

INSTRUCTIONS/IDEAS

Option 1: Prepare a Defense

Imagine that a friend who was raised in a very different religion asked you about what you believe and about what it's like to be Coptic Orthodox. In pairs or individually, come up with how you would explain your faith to your friend in hopes of convincing them to perhaps share your beliefs. After brainstorming, have each student or pair present to the class.

After, have each student memorize 1 Peter 3:15.

"...And always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear" (1 Peter 3:15)

Option 2: Faith Bracelet Craft

Using colored beads and the chart below, have students create "Wordless" faith bracelets for themselves and/or their friends/siblings.

Each color of the Bracelet represents an important Bible truth about Salvation

  • BLACK - Sin - Romans 3:23 - All have sinned
  • RED - Blood - I John 1:7 - Jesus' blood covers all sin
  • WHITE - Pure - Psalm 51:7 - Jesus washes away confessed sin
  • GREEN - Grow - 2 Peter 3:18 - Grow in the knowledge of the Lord
  • YELLOW - Heaven - John 14:2 - Believe on Jesus and receive Eternal Life

Materials:

  • Round Pony Beads 1 each: Black, red, white, yellow, green
  • Round Pony Beads 2 each: Clear or Blue
  • 13-15″ black or brown suede leather lace. Leather works better than other cords because the beads do not slip over the knots.

Instructions:

  • Tie knot 1 on lace.
  • Thread beads onto the lace in specific color order (black, red, white, yellow and green).
  • Tie knot 2 on lace
  • Thread the two clear or blue beads on one end of the lace. Thread the other end of the lace through the two beads.
  • Tie knot 3 and 4 on lace.
