OBJECTIVE

The objective of the Saint module is to teach eighth graders about the rich tradition of writers in the Coptic Orthodox Church throughout its history. They will learn how the different writers not only passed down wisdom which we must apply in our own lives, but also how their writings contributed to and ultimately shaped the Christian faith as a whole.

You will notice each lesson incorporates readings and writings from the fathers. Please think deeply about how best to transmit these to your Sunday School group when preparing your lessons.

INSTRUCTIONS/IDEAS

  • Each student will draw an icon of Christ. Hopefully, this activity will appeal to each student's artistic side and will allow them to gain an appreciation for how icons are "breathed" and appreciate the details in each icon, shapes, colors and objects included.
  • They will need etching paper, pencil, eraser, ruler and a computer.
  • Before the student draws their icon, they watch an explanation of the icon of Christ. Tasoni Therese Henein through ACTS explains the inspiration and symbolism of the colors, the shapes, the clothing, etc. on youtube

  • Using the youtube video below, Fadi Mikhail of UK Coptic Icons teaches how to draw the face of a young Christ. This is a follow-along tutorial using proportions and symmetry.

  • It may take the student a few weeks to complete this, but once they are done with their masterpiece, they can be displayed in the classroom.
