  1. Copies of icons from Annunciation, Nativity, Entrance to the Temple, and Epiphany (can be found at your church bookstore or from theotokos.org
  2. Wooden blocks, slightly larger than the size of the icons (Materials 2 through 6 can be bought at craft stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby)
  3. Permanent markers
  4. Acrylic paint, maroon color
  5. Mod podge
  6. Disposable paint brushes, two per student
  7. Paper bowls to distribute paint and mod podge to the students
  8. Lots of wipes And disposable table cloths
  9. (optional) paint smocks to protect the kids' clothes from paint

Directions:

  1. This is do-able in one class time, but everything should be set up and ready before the kindergartners enter the room.
  2. Cover all the tables with disposable table cloths. Have a table in the front of the room, only for the teacher to access, that will hold all the materials you'll need for this project. Also set up another draped table that will hold their finished icons to dry.
  3. On the teacher table, set up rows of paper bowls, two per student. One bowl should have a generous amount of paint and the other bowl should have mod podge. Place one paint brush in every bowl so they're ready to go.
  4. You're now ready for the students
  5. Allow each student to choose which of the four icons they want for their project and have them write their names on the back of their wooden blocks.
  6. Once the child is seated with their wooden block, with their name on the back, and their chosen icon, give them their bowl of paint. Instruct the child to paint the front and sides of the wooden block.
  7. Once the paint is on, throw away their paint bowl and brush and give them their hodge podge bowl and brush. Instruct them to paint the back of their icon with mod podge, like glue, and then adhere it to the front of their wooden block.
  8. Next, instruct them to cover the front of the icon with more mod podge to give it a shiny finish.
  9. And they're done Throw away the mod podge bowls and brushes. Use the wipes to clean their hands and any messes that may have occurred.

Allow their icons to dry in a safe place, let them know they can pick them up the following week. If you have enough copies of the icons, allow the students to take them home to add to their prayer corners.
