Helping Others

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the service module is to teach the children how to implement service in our lives. In Kindergarten, we will go over the importance of helping others and how to treat others. Help them realize how their actions are a service to those around them.

INTRODUCTION & HOOK - 10 Minutes

Materials:

  • Bowl
  • Milk
  • Clear Soap
  • Q - Tip
  • Food coloring

Bring in a bowl of milk, and add drops of food coloring to the milk. Each color represents different people in the world. The food coloring represents people that need Christians in their lives. This Q-tip represents us, the children of God. He blessed us with kindness (fruit of the spirit). He wants us to spread His kindness to the rest of the world. (dip the Q-tip into the soap to cover the tip) This Q-tip is covered with Clear soap as a child of God. As children of God, when we help others we spread kindness to everyone we touch. Take the Q-tip and touch each color. As we touch each color, the colors spread. As soon as we touch a person's life, that person spreads kindness to others and it touches more lives.

We can help others by showing kindness at home with our family. We listen to our parents and pick up our toys. At school, we can comfort someone or share our toys. If someone is sitting alone, you invite them to play with you. You can help others with a smile or a hug. You spread kindness and God's love when you help others around you.

  1. Ask children: how do you help other people? How do you help their families and friends?
  2. Give examples of helping others.
  3. Why should we help others?
    1. It's the Christian thing to do. Our Lord Jesus Christ helped many people while He was living on earth. That's why we should help other people. We want to be Christ-like. We always look to be better children.
    2. If and when we become in need, people will help us.

HOLY SCRIPTURE - 5 Minutes

Luke 10:29-37 - Story of the Good Samaritan

Memory Verse

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" Matthew 7:12

CONTENT (KEY POINTS) - 10 Minutes

A Long time ago when Jesus was on earth, He liked to tell people stories to understand what He wants to teach. One day people asked our Lord Jesus Christ who is considered my neighbor so I can love him. Then Jesus told them this story; a man was walking along the road and was suddenly robbed, beaten and left hurting. A priest walked by and did not help him. Then another man (who is from the same village as the beaten man) walked by, but did not help him. Later, a Samaritan man (who doesn't know the beaten man) came to him and stopped to help him. He had compassion on him. (Explain what compassion means.) "...he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine; and set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him" Luke 29:34. The next day, the Samaritan man gave money to the innkeeper (small hotel) and told him to take care of the wounded man. He also told him if he needed more money to take care of the wounded man, he would come back and pay him. When Jesus told this story, he asked: "So which of these three do you think was a neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?' And he said, "He who showed mercy on him.' Then Jesus said to them, 'Go and do likewise." Luke 29:36-37

After telling the story, discuss how nice and compassionate the Good Samaritan was. Then, repeat the verse, "Go and do likewise." Have students repeat it as well and try to memorize it. Explain what this verse means.

DISCUSSION (Challenge) - 5 Minutes

Have the students repeat the verses. Have them tell a partner one way they can help another person. How can they be good friends at school? Give examples, such as if a friend is sitting alone, what can they do?

LIFE APPLICATION (Action) - 10 Minutes

Discuss how students can apply this lesson to their lives. A simple thing the children can do is help their siblings pick up their toys or share with them. They can also ask what their parents need help with around the house and start by keeping your room in good order, instead of Mom putting in order you help by putting your own room in order.

ACTIVITY- 5 Minutes

Have students complete the craft attached. Using two sheets of beige construction paper, or craft kit from the link below, make a bandaid with the memory verse written inside. Explain that this is to remind them to always help those in need.
